William Merritt Chase (1849–1916) was a prominent American painter and influential art teacher associated with the Impressionist and Tonalist movements. Born in Indiana, he studied at the National Academy of Design in New York and later in Munich, where he developed his technical precision and love for the Old Masters. Renowned for his portraits, still lifes, and landscapes, Chase embraced plein-air painting and often depicted urban parks like Central Park. He founded the Chase School, now Parsons School of Design, and was a leader in promoting Impressionist techniques in America. His vibrant, versatile work significantly shaped American art
