Description
Claude Monet (1840-1926) was a French painter and a leading figure of the Impressionist movement. He was born in Paris but spent most of his childhood in Le Havre, where he developed a passion for painting. He studied at the Académie Suisse in Paris, where he met other future Impressionists such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Alfred Sisley.
In the 1860s, Monet began to develop his unique style, which emphasized the effects of light and atmosphere on color. He often painted outdoors, or en plein air, to capture the changing light and colors of nature. He was particularly interested in the play of light on water, and many of his most famous paintings depict water lilies, bridges, and reflections.
Monet's work was initially rejected by the traditional art establishment, but he eventually gained recognition and success. He exhibited with the Impressionists, including at their first group exhibition in 1874. Monet continued to develop his style throughout his career, and his later paintings became more abstract and experimental.
Monet's most famous series of paintings are his Water Lilies, which he painted in the last 30 years of his life. He lived in Giverny, where he created a garden with a pond that became the subject of many of his paintings. Monet died in 1926, leaving a legacy as one of the most important painters of the 19th and 20th centuries.
