Edward S. Curtis (1868–1952) was an American photographer and ethnologist known for his comprehensive documentation of Native American tribes and cultures in the early 20th century. Born in Wisconsin, Curtis developed an interest in photography at a young age and became a successful portrait photographer in Seattle, Washington.
In 1896, Curtis was invited to join an expedition to photograph the North American West. This experience sparked his lifelong fascination with Native American cultures, and he dedicated much of his career to documenting and preserving their way of life. Over the course of three decades, Curtis traveled extensively throughout North America, visiting over 80 tribes and taking more than 40,000 photographs.
Curtis's most ambitious project was "The North American Indian," a multi-volume series that aimed to comprehensively document the traditional cultures and customs of Native American tribes. The project involved photographing and recording the...
