Artist's Description

Chaim Soutine (1893-1943) was a Russian-French painter known for his emotionally charged and highly expressive works. Born in Smilavichy, a part of the Russian Empire (now in Belarus), Soutine's art was profoundly shaped by his tumultuous life, which included a childhood marked by poverty and an escape to Paris to pursue his passion for painting.

In Paris, Soutine found himself in the heart of the vibrant Montparnasse art scene, where he developed a distinctive style that combined elements of Fauvism and Expressionism. His paintings were characterized by bold, thick brushstrokes, intense colors, and a focus on subjects such as still life, landscapes, and portraits.

Soutine's most renowned works include his series of paintings of butchered animals, which are visceral and emotionally charged, reflecting his personal and cultural experiences. His portraits, too, are striking, revealing a deep empathy for his subjects.
