Description
William Gottlieb was an American photographer known for his iconic images of jazz musicians during the 1930s and 1940s. Born on January 28, 1917 in Brooklyn, New York, Gottlieb developed a passion for music at a young age and began taking photographs of jazz musicians while studying at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania.
After graduation, Gottlieb moved to Washington D.C. and began working as a writer for the Washington Post. However, his love for jazz and photography eventually led him to pursue a career in music photography. In 1938, he began photographing jazz musicians, including Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, and Billie Holiday, among many others.
Gottlieb's photographs were published in a variety of publications, including Down Beat magazine, and helped to shape the public's perception of jazz music and its performers. His images captured the energy and spirit of the jazz scene during a pivotal time in its development, and have since become iconic representations of the genre.
In addition to his photography work, Gottlieb also authored several books on jazz, including "The Golden Age of Jazz" and "Jazz Masters of the Thirties". He passed away on April 23, 2006, but his photographs continue to inspire and captivate jazz enthusiasts around the world.
