Born in 1871 in Tokyo, Japan, Shōtei began his artistic journey studying traditional Japanese painting techniques. However, he later shifted his focus to woodblock printing, a medium that allowed him to express his love for nature and capture the essence of Japan's changing landscapes.
Shōtei's artistry was heavily influenced by the Shin-hanga (New Print) movement, which sought to revive and modernize the traditional ukiyo-e woodblock printing style.
