Karl Bodmer was a Swiss artist and printmaker who lived from 1809 to 1893. He is best known for his illustrations and prints of the American West, which were created during his travels in North America in the early 1830s.
Bodmer was born in Switzerland and began his artistic career as an apprentice to a lithographer. In 1832, he was hired by German naturalist and explorer, Prince Maximilian of Wied, to accompany him on a journey to North America. During the expedition, Bodmer created detailed illustrations and prints of the people, landscapes, and wildlife of the American West.
Bodmer's illustrations and prints were characterized by their attention to detail and realism. He was particularly known for his depictions of the Native American tribes of the West, and his illustrations remain some of the most important visual records of these cultures.
