Born in 1871 in Tokyo, Japan, Shōtei began his artistic journey studying traditional Japanese painting techniques. Shōtei's artistry was heavily influenced by the Shin-hanga (New Print) movement, which sought to revive and modernize the traditional ukiyo-e woodblock printing style.
