Egon Schiele (1890–1918) was an Austrian painter known for his expressive and often provocative works, particularly in the fields of portraiture and figurative art. He was born in Tulln, Austria, and showed an early talent for drawing. Schiele studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he encountered the work of Gustav Klimt, who would become a significant influence on his artistic development.

Schiele's style is characterized by its raw emotion, distortion of form, and bold use of line. He often depicted the human figure in a manner that was both confrontational and deeply psychological, exploring themes of sexuality, death, and the human condition. His portraits, in particular, are known for their intense psychological insight and often unsettling realism.

Throughout his career, Schiele faced controversy due to the explicit nature of some of his works, which challenged the conservative social norms of his time. He was briefly imprisoned in 1912 on charges of immorality and seduction of a minor, a period that deeply affected his art.

Tragically, Schiele's life and career were cut short by the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918. He died at the age of 28, just three days after his pregnant wife, Edith Harms, succumbed to the same illness. Despite his relatively short career, Schiele left behind a significant body of work that continues to captivate audiences with its intensity and emotional depth. Today, he is regarded as one of the foremost figures of Austrian Expressionism and a pioneer of modernist art.
