Oscar Edmund Berninghaus was an American artist known for his paintings of the American West, particularly his depictions of Native American peoples and scenes of the frontier. He was born on October 2, 1874, in St. Louis, Missouri.
Berninghaus began his career as a commercial lithographer but later turned to painting full-time. He was a member of the Taos Society of Artists, a group of artists who were inspired by the landscapes and cultures of the American Southwest, particularly the Taos Pueblo in New Mexico.
Berninghaus's artwork often focused on the daily lives of Native American tribes, capturing scenes of hunting, fishing, ceremonies, and traditional activities. He was known for his ability to convey the spirit and vitality of his subjects, as well as his skillful use of color and composition.
