Artist's Description

William Holbrook Beard (1824–1900) was an American painter known for his humorous and anthropomorphic depictions of animals, particularly monkeys. Born in Painesville, Ohio, Beard began his artistic career as a portrait painter, later shifting his focus to animal subjects.

Beard's artistic style was characterized by a whimsical and satirical approach, and he gained popularity for his imaginative compositions that assigned human characteristics to animals, often placing them in comical and human-like situations. His work contributed to the 19th-century American fascination with anthropomorphism and the exploration of the human condition through animal allegory.

In the mid-1800s, Beard moved to New York City, where he became associated with the emerging art scene. He was a member of the National Academy of Design and exhibited regularly at prestigious venues, earning acclaim for his distinctive and entertaining paintings.
