Artist's Description
Benjamin West (1738–1820) was an American-born painter who became a pivotal figure in the development of history painting during the 18th century. Known for his dramatic and large-scale works, such as The Death of General Wolfe, West's innovative approach to blending contemporary events with classical composition revolutionized historical painting. He moved to England in 1763, where he became court painter to King George III and co-founded the Royal Academy of Arts, eventually serving as its president. Though West never returned to America, he influenced many American artists, including his student, John Singleton Copley, helping to shape the course of Western art.
