John C. H. Grabill (1876–1953) was an American photographer known for capturing the landscapes, people, and events of the American West during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Chicago, Grabill began his photographic career in the late 1880s. He opened a photography studio in Sturgis, South Dakota, where he documented the rapidly changing frontier life.
Grabill's work is particularly notable for its depiction of the mining activities in the Black Hills of South Dakota, including scenes from the Gold Rush. His photographs provide a vivid and valuable historical record of the daily life, hardships, and aspirations of the people who sought fortune in the Western frontier.
One of Grabill's most iconic images is the photograph titled "Homestake Mine, Lead City, S.D.," which showcases the intense mining operations in the region. His collection also includes portraits of Native Americans, settlers, and various scenes from the towns and landscapes of the American West.
Though Grabill's career as a photographer was relatively short-lived, his visual documentation of the American West remains a significant contribution to the historical record, offering a glimpse into a transformative period in American history.
