Description
The Fall of the Alamo is a painting by American artist Robert Jenkins Onderdonk that depicts the final moments of the Battle of the Alamo, a pivotal event in the Texas Revolution. The painting shows a chaotic scene in which Texan defenders are outnumbered and overwhelmed by Mexican soldiers, with smoke and flames rising in the background.
Onderdonk painted the work in 1903, almost seventy years after the battle itself took place. He was inspired by the story of the Alamo and the heroism of the Texan defenders, many of whom were killed in the battle.
The painting quickly became a popular symbol of Texan independence and patriotism, and it was widely reproduced and displayed in public spaces such as schools, government buildings, and museums. The Fall of the Alamo remains one of the most iconic and recognizable images of Texas history.
